There are three kinds of plasma consumables on the market, and most buyers only think about two of them. Getting the third one straight is the difference between saving money, getting burned, and potentially breaking the law.
Most people picture a simple split: genuine OEM parts on one side, "aftermarket" on the other. But the the real landscape is three groups — and "aftermarket" and "counterfeit" are not the same thing. One is an honest alternative. The other is fraud.
The three categories
Genuine OEM. These are the parts made by the machine's manufacturer, sold under their name. They're legitimate, they're proven, and they carry a genuine-brand premium. Nothing wrong with them except the price.
Counterfeit. This is the dangerous one. A counterfeit part is built to deceive you — packaged in fake OEM boxes, stamped with forged branding, sold as "genuine" when it isn't. The whole point of a counterfeit is that you don't know it's not the real thing. It's not a pricing choice; it's fraud, and in most places it's illegal. Counterfeits are typically made as cheaply as possible with no engineering and no accountability, because the seller's entire model depends on you never knowing what you bought.
Genuine aftermarket. This is the honest alternative. A genuine aftermarket part tells you exactly what it is: an independently manufactured consumable, engineered to match the OEM spec, that crosses to a specific genuine part number — and never pretends to be the OEM part. It's sold under its own manufacturer's name, at its own price, with the OEM cross-reference stated openly so you can verify the match.
The critical line runs between the second and third groups. A counterfeit hides what it is. Genuine aftermarket announces what it is. That difference — honesty — is everything.
How to spot the difference
The tells are about transparency. A legitimate aftermarket part has nothing to hide, so it hides nothing:
- It's sold under its own brand, not the OEM's. A genuine aftermarket consumable is branded as what it is. If something is being sold as genuine OEM at a suspiciously low price, that's the warning sign — real genuine parts don't show up at clone prices, so either it's counterfeit or something's wrong.
- It states the exact OEM number it crosses to. An honest aftermarket seller tells you "this replaces OEM part #XXXXXX." A counterfeiter can't do that openly — their whole game is pretending to be the original, not crossing to it.
- It names the manufacturer. You can find out who actually made the part. A counterfeit's maker is deliberately hidden.
- The packaging is honest. Genuine aftermarket parts come in the manufacturer's own packaging, not a copy of the OEM's box with forged logos.
If a seller is coy about any of these — won't name the maker, won't state the cross-reference, sells "genuine" at aftermarket prices — that's your signal to walk.
