HPR® XD Consumables: How to Find the Right Parts for Your Machine

The HPR® XD line — HPR130XD, HPR260XD, and HPR400XD — is built for one thing: high-precision mechanized cutting, day in and day out, on a table. And when you're running a production table, the last thing you want is the wrong consumable in the torch, killing your cut quality or your part life halfway through a job.

The catch is that HPR XD consumables aren't a single set. The right nozzle, electrode, shield, swirl ring, and cooling tube change based on how you're cutting — and getting it wrong is expensive in a way it isn't on a hand torch. Here's how the parts actually break down, and the fastest way to land on the right stack.

The three things that decide your HPR XD stack

On a Powermax® hand torch, you pick an amperage and go. HPR XD is more particular, because it's engineered for precision cuts across multiple gases and materials. Three variables set the stack:

  1. Amperage. The HPR XD systems run a wide amperage range, and the consumables are amperage-specific. A 130-amp nozzle and a 260-amp nozzle are not interchangeable — run the wrong one and you'll see it immediately in the cut, and in how fast the parts wear.

  2. Material and gas. This is where HPR XD gets more involved than air plasma. Mild steel typically runs oxygen; stainless and aluminum run nitrogen or an H35/argon-hydrogen mix. The consumable set — especially the nozzle and electrode — is matched to the process, not just the amperage. The same 260-amp machine cutting mild steel and cutting stainless uses different parts.

  3. Process type. HPR XD supports different cut modes — standard cutting, fine-feature, bevel — and some of these call for specific consumables. If you're running fine-feature work, you're not necessarily on the same stack as a straight production cut at the same amperage.

Miss any one of these and you can put a part in the torch that physically fits but wasn't designed for what you're doing — which shows up as poor edge quality, excess dross, or consumables that wear out far faster than they should.

Why guessing gets expensive on a table

On a mechanized table, a bad consumable choice doesn't just cost you the part. It costs you the sheet you're cutting, the time to notice, and the re-cut. A worn or wrong nozzle wandering off-square on a nested sheet can scrap a whole plate. That's the real cost of grabbing the wrong part — not the $40 nozzle, the $400 sheet under it.
