Your Supplier Isn't Allowed To Tell You There's an Alternative

Your Supplier Isn't Allowed To Tell You There's an Alternative

Ask your plasma supplier what your options are for consumables, and you'll get one answer.

That's not because he's hiding something from you. It's because of a clause in an agreement he signed years ago, and it's worth understanding, because it quietly shapes every parts conversation you've ever had.

The clause

Most OEM distribution agreements prohibit the distributor from carrying competing aftermarket lines.

That's not a secret and it isn't improper. It's ordinary franchise structure. You'll find the same arrangement in automotive, in agricultural equipment, in compressed air, in almost any category where a manufacturer builds a dealer network. The manufacturer invests in training, territory, demo equipment and marketing support. In return the dealer commits to the brand. Both sides get something.

Nobody in that relationship is doing anything wrong.

Now follow it through

The distributor you've bought from for fifteen years knows your machine. He knows your shop, he knows what you cut, he knows which operator is hard on consumables and which one isn't. He has probably been out to see you.

He is also contractually prohibited from telling you that another option exists.

Not won't. Can't.

So when you ask him what your options are, you get one option. And the thing worth sitting with is that he's being straight with you the whole time. He isn't withholding anything in bad faith. He's honouring an agreement he signed, exactly as he agreed to honour it.

That's the part most buyers never work out. They assume that if there were a sensible alternative, the person who knows their equipment best would have mentioned it. It's a reasonable assumption and it's wrong, and it's wrong for a reason that has nothing to do with the alternative's merits.

I know how it works because I enforced it

I spent ten years on the other side of this business. Distribution channel manager, national accounts.

Part of that job was holding distributors to the terms they'd signed. If one of mine had been caught carrying aftermarket, I'dmake the phone call. That wasn't a grey area and I didn't treat it as one. It was the job, and I did it well.

I'm not telling you that to run anybody down. Those are good distributors doing what they agreed to do, and most of them are the best technical resource in their region. If you have one, keep him.

I'm telling you because it explains the shape of the market you're buying in.

What it means for you

Three practical things.

One supplier's catalogue isn't a market survey. If you've only ever been shown one option, you haven't compared anything — you've been shown the only thing that person is permitted to show you.

The absence of a recommendation isn't evidence. Nobody telling you about an alternative is not the same as there being no alternative worth knowing about.

And the people best placed to advise you are the ones least able to. That's the awkward one. The technical knowledge sits with the distributor. The freedom to tell you about every option doesn't.

Which is why somebody independent has to exist

If the only people who can advise you are the people who can only sell you one thing, then you're not getting advice. You're getting a catalogue.

That's the gap we exist in. We're not tied to a single manufacturer's line, so we can tell you when something fits, when it doesn't, and when the right answer is to buy genuine — and we do say that, because sometimes it's true.

Our consumable finder is free and always will be. Machine, torch, amperage, done — the complete stack in the order the parts go into the torch, with the OEM number each part crosses to. No account, no purchase. You can use it to look up genuine part numbers if that's what you're after, and plenty of people do.

Use it, buy from whoever earns it, and at least make the decision knowing there was one to make.
